CCTV news, on the night of January 4, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov telephoned to exchange views and coordinate positions on the current sharp tension in the Gulf and cooperation between the two sides in the UN Security Council.
Wang said China is highly concerned about the intensification of the US-Iranian contradictions and opposes the misuse of force in international relations, and military risk-taking is unacceptable. China advocates that all parties should earnestly abide by the purposes of the Charter of the United Nations and the basic norms of international relations, respect Iraq's sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity, and safeguard peace and stability in the Middle East and the Gulf region. As a permanent member of the UN Security Council, China and Russia have an important responsibility for international peace and security. The two sides should strengthen strategic communication, jointly safeguard international law and international egalitarianism, and play a responsible role in properly responding to the current situation in the Middle East.
Mr. Lavrov stated that the Russian and Chinese positions were fully consistent. The conduct of the United States is illegal and should be condemned. The Russian side is opposed to the roughening of the sovereignty of other countries, especially in unilateral military operations. Russia would like to coordinate closely with China to play a constructive role in avoiding the escalation of regional tensions.
